I am looking at this to. A zero and a ESP 9$ a node. but power? WiFi?

Power is same as for Arduino Uno, you need it anyway. and I don't think Wifi is a requirement too, since it can communicate with the main RPI unit over the RFM chip.
So, the zero sends sensor data back to the main RPI over RFM (say, the light is on && there is no one there), and main RPI sends back action to be performed (say turn light off) which the zero then uses a relay to turn light off.
This can be done with arduino, no problem, and arduino might be more suited for this.
